Item: Bangle with birthstone charms for ‘A’
Occasion: 40th birthday gift
Materials: Sterling silver, amethyst, moissanite, topaz
Brief: To create a special birthday silver bangle, which incorporates birthstones of the recipient and her children. The bangle also needed to be a similar style to the wearer’s other jewellery to compliment her personal style.
After speaking to A’s family about the jewellery she likes, I designed a hammer finish sterling silver oval bangle. We decided on the oval shape to allow it to sit comfortably on her wrist. To distinguish the children’s birthstones, I added two loose charms, each with a birthstone set in it. A’s birthstone would then be flush set within the bangle.
The children’s birthstones are amethyst and diamond. I was able to source the amethyst within budget, but the diamond was switched for a moissanite as a more affordable option. Moissanites are a lab grown alternative to diamonds, and offer durability and resilience as well as a lot of sparkle!
When looking for the topaz stones, I found a ‘London Blue’ option, which was the perfect choice to reflect A’s birthplace! I also thought the depth of colour would look particularly stunning against the sterling silver of the bangle.
After handcrafting the bangle, I flush set six topaz stones equidistance around the outside. For the charms, I set the moissanite in a 9ct gold bezel to enable the stone to stand out and distinguish it from the silver set amethyst on the bracelet.
